DREAM ABOUT SKIING

A woman from California sent this dream; the names have been changed for purposes of this analysis.  As background, Tony is her cousin who has passed away, and the brother of Emma, Dara, and Rae.

Last weekend, I had a dream about Tony.  His sisters Emma, Dara, Rae and I were in my dream. There was lots of snow outside, and Emma, Tony and I wanted to go skiing.  Dara and Rae didn't want to ski, so Tony said to them, "See you later", and just he, Emma and I went skiing. We were laughing and having a good time.

It’s significant that Tony has passed away but Dreamer and Emma are enjoying life with him as if he’s still alive.  It’s also significant that the activity the women share with Tony is skiing.  In general, skiing in snow suggests moving very fast on ground by using the snow to speed up progress.

Let’s now look at the properties of snow.  Snow provides a pristine, white coating over whatever it falls on.  If a house needs a new paint job and perhaps it’s looking old and droopy, when the snow falls over it, suddenly the house looks just as pretty as everyone else’s again.  If the sidewalk is cracked and ugly, when the snow falls on it, it looks smooth and even again.  So snow is a symbol of “covering” what’s underneath.

Skis only become an advantage when there’s snow.  A skiing dream, then, suggests that there is something difficult that must be dealt with, and the skier has found a way to turn that difficulty into something that can be overcome, and with laughter and fun at that.

It seems to me that Dreamer and Emma are the type of women who refuse to be blocked by problems or by difficult situations.  Rather they will find a way to turn these challenges to their advantage.  Because Tony has passed, it’s likely that the challenge has something to do with death.  Not necessarily the death of a person, but the death of a relationship, job or situation… or even the death of things as they are.

So, perhaps Dreamer and Emma share a similar dilemma… trying to deal with the “death” of something or someone.  Dara and Rae appear in the dream because they don’t feel the need to “ski” with a “dead” situation.  Perhaps Dara and Rae aren’t dealing with any issues similar to what Dreamer and Emma are enduring.

Dreamer and Emma, for example, may have been struggling with a close relationship issue… a friend who’s no longer a friend, or even a husband or boyfriend they no longer love.  Then, for whatever reason, Dreamer and Emma chose to “ski” with that relationship… cover it with snow, and find a way to “slide” over the difficulties.

It appears, then,  that Dreamer and Emma have covered their dilemma by coating the problem with an attitude which overlooks the flaws.  And by creating a “snow” job, they’ve gotten through the hard part and have made it way to the top of an uphill situation.  It’s downhill all the way now, and not only that, since there’s still snow, they get to ski down… so much easier and faster.

Then at some point, Tony disappears and Emma and I go looking for him.  We search and search for hours.  Then we find him under a tree, shivering.  We bring him back to the cabin, take off his wet clothes, and wrap him up in blankets in front of a fireplace.  Emma goes into the kitchen and makes some hot chocolate for the three of us.  We sip our hot chocolate, and Emma says to Tony, “Are you all thawed out now?”  It seems so funny, so we all start laughing.  Then I woke up feeling rejuvenated.

In forcing themselves to treat the dead relationship as if it wasn’t dead, they in fact brought it back to life.  If they really look to find the flaws – the issues and problems which caused the “death” of the relationship – they still exist, but they’ve been put on “ice”… ignored.  Emma, in particular, makes an effort to resuscitate the relationship, and in fact, when she deals with the issues which caused the “death” in the first place, it’s something to laugh about.

It’s interesting that when people fight, and they think back to what caused the fight, many times they can’t even remember, or sometimes whatever caused the fight seems so silly that they end up laughing about it.

The same seems to apply in this situation.  Dreamer wakes up rejuvenated… feeling better and younger and fresher… ready for a new beginning.

Good luck to you, Dreamer… and to you, Emma!

May your snoozles bring you sweet dreams.
